At the end of a full-term |pregnancy|, 38-42 weeks, the |fetus| undergoes tremendous changes just prior to being born. The fetal |kidneys| have matured and the |liver| is able to cope with some of the waste products produced. The |fetus| now fills the |uterus|, and there is more amniotic fluid around the baby than at any other stage of |pregnancy|. There is less space for the |fetus| to move around in, and the mother can often tell the difference between the |fetus|' arm and leg movements. If the |fetus| is a male the testicles have descended into the |scrotum|. The bones of the |skull| are still very soft and pliable, but this is necessary to allow the head to pass through the birth canal during labor.
